Cross: the continuing Sign of Hope

We live in a world that is marked by uncertainty, facing wars, economic instability, and climate crises. It such a context it is hope that becomes the anchor that sustains individuals and communities. It empowers people to persevere through hardships, believing that renewal and transformation are still possible. The beauty of the cross is that it becomes a source of strength in uncertainty. Gazing at the cross gives a strength that words cannot easily explain.

Hope is not passive; it inspires people to work toward justice, peace, and healing. In times of division and suffering, hope encourages acts of kindness, reconciliation, and advocacy for a better future. Cross that offers hope becomes a catalyst for compassion, kindness and the pursuit for justice. It constantly challenges us that life is to be poured out as a fragrant offering that touches lives and heals communities.

Hope reminds us that even in the darkest moments, light will break through. It is deeply connected to faith, resilience, and the belief that goodness will prevail. In a world longing for peace and restoration, hope keeps the vision of a brighter tomorrow alive. Cross is a reminder of the ‘third day’ where the forces of darkness would ultimatly give way to Light, where doubts will be addressed, where tears would be wiped, where faith would be strengthened.

Hope amidst suffering expected

The Cross is a reminder that suffering is not the end of the story. Just as Christ’s suffering led to resurrection and new life, our own struggles can lead to transformation, renewal, and a deeper experience of God’s grace. The Cross assures us that pain is not meaningless but can be a pathway to redemption. It is important to note that Jesus expected the suffering since it was inevitable when you stand againt principalities and powers. He did share with his disciples clearly that the Son of Man will go through “great pain” but at the same time also told them but on the third day he would rise again.

Cross would continue to stand as a sign of God’s presence as we boldly prepare for the consequences of the camapigns for justice and truth. In times of expected suffering, the Cross reassures us that we are never alone. Jesus, who bore the weight of human pain, walks with us in our struggles. His sacrifice reminds us that God understands our suffering and offers strength, comfort, and the promise of ultimate victory.

It is worth being reminded that Polycarpus of Smyrna clearly saw suffering coming his way, but at the face of the expected suffering when flames were lit on him he boldly prayed- “I bless You, Father, for judging me worthy of this hour, so that in the company of martyrs I may share the cup of Christ.”

Hope amidst suffering experienced

In our pain, we find hope in the Cross because it reminds us that God is not distant from our suffering. Jesus endured betrayal, pain, and death, showing that God understands and walks with us in our darkest moments. The Cross assures us that we are never alone in our struggles. Cross becomes the sign of God’s solidarity with human suffering.

Suffering can feel overwhelming, but the Cross reminds us that it is not the final word. Just as Jesus’ death was followed by resurrection, our suffering can lead to renewal and transformation. The Cross stands as a promise that beyond every hardship, God is working to bring healing and restoration. The cross is a constant reminder that life is eternal and no unjust trial nor unfair death penalties can influence its eternal nature.

Dietrich Bonhoeffer often reminded us The cross is not the end of the story, but the pathway to resurrection. St. John Chrysostom boldly declared The cross means there is no shipwreck without hope; there is no dark without dawn; nor storm without haven.

Hope amidst suffering explained

It is never easy to explain or interpret suffering. In times of great suffering, the Cross reminds us that pain is not meaningless. Jesus’ suffering led to the redemption of the world, showing that even in our deepest struggles, God is at work. The Cross teaches us that hope is not the absence of suffering but the assurance that God can bring purpose and victory through it. The cross reframes suffering as a path to redemption.

The story of the Cross does not end in death but in resurrection. In a world filled with war, injustice, and despair, the Cross stands as a powerful sign that brokenness is not final. Hope is found in the promise that beyond every Good Friday, there is an Easter morning—God’s love triumphs over suffering, offering new life and restoration. We might have to go through Maundy Thursday experiences of betrayal and denial, of unfair trials and public mocking; we might live through the inexplicable pain of Good Friday; we might go through all the darkness of the Saturday but we rest assured that the risen one would come by asking- Why are you crying?

Tim Keller once said- Suffering and the Cross remind us that even in the darkest night, God is writing a greater story of redemption.

As we traverse another experience of the Lenten Season let us pray we would be able to better comprehend the meaning of the cross and be better prepared to face difficult terrains in life’s journey.
