“Wise Ones” is ACF’s gathering for older adults. Our objective is to provide a social event for older adults to share fellowship and discuss issues among their peers. The group meets every month, alternating between an afternoon coffee hour at a café and an evening venue in the church with wine and cheese.

July 2025

We’ve been planning to discuss Bonhoeffer quotes for months…and yet we never seem to get to them. By the time we all share what has transpired, what is concerning us and anything else we want to share, it is time for a closing prayer. Time always flies, along with laughs and always learning more about each other! On our meeting on the 27th June, there were also birthdays to be celebrated with French Crémant.

On Friday, 22 November, the Wise Ones gathered for our final get-together of the year. With Glühwein, other wine and cheese and Molly’s fabulous carrot cake, we had a very lively discussion around some axioms for wisdom when one ages. Ha, nine adults and sometimes nine different opinions. We could have sat for yet another….round!

Recap: Wise Ones Evening on 6th Sept 2024

Our Wise Ones wine and cheese evening on September 6th was blessed with a talk by our own Axel Kroeger about his earlier experience in South America. As a young medical doctor, Axel journeyed to the Ecuadorian jungle of Sucua under the auspices of the DED, Deutsche Entwicklungsdienst (1963-2010). Spending 4 years among the Shuar, an indigenous ethnic group, Axel’s primary focus was researching and treating tuberculosis. He shared with us the differences between Western medicine and the methods of traditional healers. There followed a lively discussion about the role of public health. A huge thank you to Axel for preparing his notes and sharing his impressions with us.

Our next get-together is afternoon coffee, October 11, 3 pm in the Schwarzes Kloster. Our final meeting in 2024 will be a pre-Advent evening, Nov. 22, wine and cheese in the church at 6 pm. Mark your calendars!
