Over the Ascension Day weekend, around 40 people from our church community enjoyed a refreshing retreat at a beautiful self-catering center nestled in the mountains of Alsace. It was particularly special to welcome members from the Anglican Church in Basel, creating new friendships and strengthening existing bonds.
Living Our Faith Monday to Saturday
Margaret and Malcolm Rittman led inspiring sessions focused on being Christians in our daily lives – not just on Sundays, but throughout the week. They encouraged us to think about how we can be Christ’s hands and feet to others, whether we’re at the playground, school, work, or even the supermarket. After being refreshed and encouraged together on Sunday, we’re called to carry that faith into every encounter during the week.
Each session began with a brief introduction before breaking into small groups for meaningful discussions. These intimate conversations were invaluable for getting to know one another better, as many of us had only met in passing before. The small group format created space for deeper connections and understanding.
Creative Expression and Family Fun
The weekend included creative prayer activities and crafts, with participants weaving fabric scraps and creating beautiful window art. Children explored the same themes about living as Christ-followers, led by Margaret in age-appropriate sessions filled with crafts and games. While adults reflected in small groups, the children played, built friendships, and enjoyed chess, dolls, and outdoor activities.
The retreat center buzzed with activity as people played football and badminton throughout the weekend. Saturday evening’s bonfire provided a cozy gathering spot for continued conversations. Our worship together included daily morning and evening prayers, culminating in a joyful and intimate communion service on Sunday.
Looking Ahead
We extend heartfelt thanks to Margaret and Malcolm for their inspiring leadership, and to everyone who helped prepare this wonderful weekend. The diversity of nationalities represented made our community even richer, and we’re already looking forward to next year’s retreat during the Ascension Day weekend (14th – 17th May 2026) – mark your calendars!

“I liked the weekend very much. For me it was a perfect combination of getting to know better people from so many different background and culture in our community, worshipping to God with amazing music and joyful singing and delicious international and German food.”

“So enriching to speak with others who I knew but had never spoken with much. I feel confirmed as a red dot, ready to be that pebble thrown into the lake. And so many thanks to the cooks (Molly’s “heavenly” meal Saturday) and to the young adults, ever ready to take and wash my cup. ❤️”
Linda
“A great time with old friends and to meet those we see each Sunday but not talk to. Interesting sessions about living as a Christian Monday to Saturday. Each session with a small group to get to know new people and have good discussions. Chance to get out on the Saturday afternoon to explore the history of the local area. (First world war battle)”
