Resting in the Presence of God

— Midweek Meditations:
thoughts, inspiration and encouragement
from ACF community members —

As many in our church family stepped away this weekend for a time of retreat and getaway, it feels fitting for us to reflect on the gift of rest, especially in a world that constantly urges us to move faster, do more, and stay busy.

Jesus Himself often withdrew from the crowds to quiet places to pray. Though surrounded by endless needs and demands, He understood the importance of stepping away to be renewed in the Father’s presence. If the Son of God needed moments of stillness, how much more do we?

For many of us, rest can feel difficult. We may physically stop working, yet our minds continue racing with worries, responsibilities, and unfinished tasks. Sometimes we carry burdens so long that we forget what true rest even feels like. But Jesus offers us a deeper kind of rest, one that goes beyond vacations or sleep. In Matthew 11:28, He says, “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.”

What a beautiful invitation.

Jesus does not say, “Come to me when you have everything together.” He simply says, “Come.” Bring the exhaustion. Bring the anxiety. Bring the disappointments and pressures. Bring the hidden weariness that others may not see. Christ welcomes us just as we are.

Perhaps this weekend was not only an opportunity for physical refreshment, but also a spiritual reminder that we were never created to carry life alone. God desires that we rest in His faithfulness. When we slow down, we begin to notice things we often miss – the beauty of creation, the joy of fellowship, the peace that comes from simply being present with Him.

Rest also reminds us that we are loved by God not because of what we accomplish, but simply because we belong to Him. So much of life measures our worth by productivity, success, or how much we can give to others. Yet in God’s presence, we do not have to earn our place. We are invited to simply be still and know that He is God. In moments of quiet, away from schedules and expectations, we often rediscover the gentle truth that our identity is found first in being children of God before anything else.

Let us learn to use rest as a sacred opportunity to reconnect with God, with one another, and with the quiet places in our hearts that need healing and renewal.

And for those who may still feel tired despite the pause, may you hear the gentle voice of Jesus again today: “Come to me… and I will give you rest.”

May we return refreshed in body and in spirit, ready to walk forward with renewed peace, gratitude, and trust in the God who lovingly restores His people.

The ACF Midweek Meditations
are written by a diverse group of our church members with the intention to seek God’s fingerprints in our lives. They range from somber to humorous and are inspired by all facets of live and faith. Written by ordinary people from all walks of life, they reflect a wide range of Christian backgrounds and spiritualities.

Each week’s text portrays the individual viewpoint of its author. They might not always resonate with everyone, and are not meant to be understood as representing the Anglican Church Freiburg as a whole. Yet, as a church that is aiming to ‘Build a Community of Grace’ we seek to practice learning from and listening to one another.

We pray that these humble ponderings add a small spark of blessing to your week.
